Stitch & Pray groupF&SUMC Stitch & Pray Group

After graduating from the Women’s Leadership Institute at Hartford Semi-
nary, Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo started a ministry of applied spirit-
uality. It embodied “compassion and the love of knitting and crocheting, combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice, which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every shawl. Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Peace Shawls or Mantles, the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way....” (www.shawlministry.com)

In September 2006, First & Summerfield started a group to share this prayer shawl ministry. We meet monthly, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M., led by Marion Sachdeva and Sandra Baird. Since October 2007 we have met in the New Haven Public Library, where there is convenient parking in the evening. We have eight members, with four to six at most meetings.

Last year, we made 15 prayer shawls, scarves and blankets for friends, colleagues, and family members. We will place our shawls of love on others this winter. This ministry brings as much joy to the makers as to the recipients of these gifts. The greater New Haven community is cordially encouraged to join our ministry of sharing.
