Trestle Board #1, July 2004
Greetings as we conclude another busy and successful year during which we received the Gold Award for out-
standing participation in the brand edge program, raised four new members, and admitted seven members. We now have 66 members, surpassing our previous all-time high of 60 in 1958. Two additional Masons will be affiliating with our Lodge as soon as possible. Our Education Officer received the brand Lodge Traveling trophy in 2003 and was again recognized for the one programs he presents during our meetings at the Grand Lodge session held last month.
We continue to do all of our own degree work and assisted several neighboring Lodges with their candi-
dates. We again participated in the All School Reunion parade. We sponsored Santa’s visit to Hudson, delivered meals on wheels, cleaned the roadside ditches, recognized our local Masonic widows on Valentines’s Day held our card and game night for George Washington’s birthday, and recognized a 50 Year Mason and a local student at our day banquet. At Grand Lodge, M.W.B. Les Spies was re-elected brand Secretary-Treasurer and W.B. Oscar Loe was again appointed District Master.
Those of you who are able to attend meetings regularly or read the news on our awesome Web site (jepthalodge.org) know we have spent some time discussing what we need to do with the exterior of our dodge building. A committee was appointed to put these ideas into focus, The 1985 paint job has peeled badly and the original thought was to cover the building with vinyl siding. We have the funds on hand to do this.
As discussion continued, it was noted that our basement has reached the point where it is an embar-
rassment to use and probably not worth the cost of re-
pair. At present, we clear the Lodge furniture out of our meeting room and bring in tables for our large gather-
ings. The Building Feasibility Committee has suggested that before residing, an addition be built onto the north side of the current building to house the kitchen and dining room. It would be 30' by 40' in size. A handicap accessible ramp is also a growing need.
The labor and expertise for such an addition has been volunteered by our many able members, except perhaps some backhoe work, etc. Total cost of the project is pegged at $20,000 to $24,000. Using funds on hand, we would need to raise $ l5,000 for this project to be possible. Several members have already committed $1,000 each.
The last time we raised money was in 1992 when we easily raised $5,000 for a new roof. This protect is more expensive and more an improvement than maintenance. We hope to assure Masonry in the Hudson area for future generations and this addition would certainly make us more visible and shed a positive light on the Craft. We NEED to know the thoughts and wishes of our members. If you feel you can support the proposed project, we need to know how much you can help. To make this possible, please answer the following questions and return in the stamped envelope enclosed by July 15th. We will be having a special meeting Tuesday, July 22, at 7:30 P.M., to review the results. Please plan to attend....
Please let us know what you think. Thank you!
— Galen Jansen, W.M.

July 20, 2004

The Brothers of Jeptha Lodge assembled at 7:30 P.M. to discuss the possibility of building an addition to the existing building.
Brian Sohl received an estimate for replacing sewer and water lines used by the Lodge and the neighbor to the east. It would cost about $1,500 to replace and re-route the lines around the proposed addition.
The dimensions of the addition were discussed, and it was decided we should consider 42 x 32' because the material would work out better than with a 40 x 30'. Randy Porter recommended nine-foot-high walls instead of ten, resulting in considerable savings.
Randy Porter had an estimate that compared favorably with one provided by Steve Wickre at our last meeting. It was concluded that the cost would be about $16-17,000, plus $4-5,000 for unlisted expense to build a 42 x 32' addition on a poured slab with a steel roof and to re-side the existing building.
The matter of taping, texturing and painting the interior drywall was estimated to cost $860, but the conclusion was that we should do it ourselves for about $200-$300.
Les Spies gave a report on the pledges and contributions received so far and it was decided we had sufficient funding to build the project. Les then made a motion to build the 42 x 32' addition on a cement slab, with a steel roof, and siding on the new and existing building with a top quality vinyl. Second by Allen Eide. There was no further discussion so W.B. Bryan Sohl called for the vote. It passed by a unanimous ballot.
Ron West was appointed Chairman of cement and all related work. Randy Porter and Steve Wickre were appointed Co-Chairmen of the general construction and the work thereto related. Everyone is automatically and both these committees. The Secretary is to open a checking account under the name “Jeptha Lodge Building Fund” to be used exclusively for transactions regarding the building project. The Secretary is to send a letter to the membership informing them of the decision made tonight and ask all who have pledged to send their checks as soon as possible by August 30, 2004. He should also remind those who have not yet made a commitment that we do need their support and to give immediate consideration toward helping fund the project at whatever level they feel they can. He is also to solicit any talents, materials, fixtures, tools, transportation or anything that might benefit the cause, even leftover material from some other project (2 x 4’, 4' or longer, etc.) Randy will furnish some used insulation. Les to contact Groths about fill gravel. Construction is scheduled to begin in about three weeks.
Les Spies, Secretary Pro Tem

The Brethren are extremely pleased with the positive outcome of the July 20 meeting on the matter of expanding and improving our facility. We are excited about the activities and hope you, too, will share in the joy, satisfaction, and support of this worthy project to whatever extent you are able.
We are canvassing the membership to thank those who sent an initial pledge, and to request that you pay that pledge by August 30. Send checks payable to “Jeptha Lodge Building Fund” to the Secretary.
We would appreciate hearing from those still con-
sidering financial support. If it is difficult for you to send support at this time, please send a pledge so we can feel confident in the financial affairs of the Lodge.
Any contribution a Brother can make of labor, ma-
terials, fixtures, tools, transportation, and so on, that might be beneficial to the construction, would be appre-
ciated. Let’s not forget talent. We never have too much of that, so bring yours to the site and put it to good use.
Even if you are unable to participate financially or directly with the construction, stop by, observe the progress, and be proud you are a member of a Lodge that is preparing a Masonic future for Masons yet unborn, right here in Hudson.

Education Officer Curt Vipond told of the sad affair of William Morgan who disappeared in 1826 in New York after threatening to expose ritual work. Later, it was proven by his letters to relatives that he lived out his life in hiding and was not the victim of foul play by Masons. Detractors used it to turn public opinion against the Craft for many years.
Building Committee Report: The ceiling has been textured and painted. Vinyl paneling and finishing molding have been installed. Overhead lights are wired. Carpet, cabinets, countertops, and the center isle have been ordered. Wood flooring will be laid in the kitchen. Brothers Steve Wickre, Brian Sohl, Les Spies, Ken Snedeker, J.  C. Harrison, Ron West, Darryl Zimbelman, and Arlan Verburg were in charge.

  3. A discussion of Hiram Abiff.
Building Committee Report: The new addition looks fan-
tastic! The only unfinished tasks are carpetlaying, plumb-

Right now, for instance, it tells us that tomorrow Santa will visit the Lodge, that we’ll practice for the F.C. degree after Santa’s visit, that we’ll be doing the F.C. degree at our next regular meeting on December 18, and that we hope to have an E.A. degree on January 8. (We don’t expect a quorum for our regular meeting on January 1.) Through the won-
ders of electronic communication, our webmaster, Wayne Spies, lives and works over 1,000 miles from Hudson, but still keeps us all informed. It is the best website I’ve ever seen for a lodge, not just in South Dakota, but everywhere. I urge you to check it out and put it on your list of favorites.
The Grand Lodge is increasing the per capita assessment by $10 over the next two years. To respond to this, the annual dues of Jeptha Lodge will increase by $10, effective with 2008. This lodge has the highest percentage of Life Members in Perpetuity of any lodge in South Dakota. A one-time payment of 17 times the annual dues then in effect will not only pay a Brother’s dues for the rest of his life will continue his financial support of both of Jeptha Lodge and the Grand Lodge of South Dakota forever. Because of the dues increase, a Life Membership costs $170 less now than it will in January and there-
after. If you have any interest at all in becoming a Life Member, contact our Secretary, M.W.B. Les Spies at either lspies@alliancecom.net or 712-982-2505. If you’re not interested in a Life Membership, we would appreciate payment of your 2008 dues at your earliest convenience. If you are a Life Member, you may sit back and know that the fee increase in dues won’t cost a penny.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night,
W.M. Allen J. Eide

Education Officer Allen Eide presented a timely and informative program on the H1N1 or “swine” flu. The Pandemic of 1918 was caused by a strain of H1N1. It is thought to have originated when an Army cook contracted it while home on leave to a farm in Kansas, then spread it to others while doing his mess hall duties. As it traveled around the world it mutated, becoming more deadly. The outbreak in 1957 was less severe, possibly due to immunities built up from 1918. According to National Public Radio, the vaccines for H1N1 are made by the same makers as seasonal flu vaccines with much more scientific scrutiny. Rare side effects seem to be concentrated in persons with underlying health problems, predominantly respiratory.

Based on St. Nicholas of Myra, a 4th century Greek Christian bishop known for generous gifts to the poor. Allen described his many names, garb, and story variations in countries throughout Europe and North America. Common theme is that good little boys & girls tend to make out better than bad ones!

Education Officer Allen Eide presented a program on the history and effects of the U.S. Census and the information it provides. The first census was taken in 1790 at which time there was one Representative for every 33,000 citizens. Currently it is one for every 700,000. Wyoming, Vermont, Arkansas, and North Dakota are statistically too small to have a Representative, but for the requirement that each state have one. There have been 435 Representatives in Congress almost continually since 1913. The census helps determine how revenues are apportioned between the states. Texas, Arizona, and Florida are expected to show the largest population gains and Ohio the largest loss in the current census. Nationally, 60 percent of households had answered the 2010 to date; South Dakota is at 67 percent, Iowa at 70 percent, and Lincoln County at 75 percent.
Dear Brothers,
I just returned from our 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Egg Toss. On behalf of your Lodge, thanks to all of you who donated your time, your supplies, your prizes, and your money to another successful endeavor by our Lodge.
There were around 25 of us there to put on the show and I’m sure you will agree that it took every one of us to get the job done because those kids are pretty darn quick! They all had a good time and it helped bring lots of people into Hudson for the benefit meal to raise money for the new Community Center.
I think I heard the cooks filled 500 plates with food in less than a half hour and they were serving for a lot longer that that.
Please make plans to work this great event again next year. It provides wonderful visibility for Jeptha Lodge and Masonry while helping out in a good cause!
You guys are the best!
Dave Hansen, Sec.
