Wayne Thomas Spies
You may know me as a professional musician, an international college professor (technology, innovation, international business, strategy, and entrepreneurship), a technologist, a published author, poet, and essayist, an entrepreneur, an engineer, a designer, an inventor, or a management consultant.
Why so many hats? Because I am really curious about the world. I am motivated by the joy of creating and problem-solving, the struggle of complex achievements, and the exhilaration of excellence. I make mistakes every day, and I learn something every day. One thing I have learned is not to work on projects or with people I do not love.

The Short Version...
I grew up in extreme rural poverty in western Iowa. “Extreme rural poverty” means we didn’t have a bathroom (not indoors, at least) or a telephone until I was a junior in high school, and most of the time we didn’t even have a car.
I was a card-carrying member of the American Federation of Musicians for ten years, and I did everything you could do in — and to — the music business.
Sometime in there I went to college. A lot. Did you ever notice that the worse the school, the gaudier its diplomas? I have a wall of diplomas and certificates. Only a couple are gaudy. I have a bachelor’s degree in corporate finance, an MPPM from Yale, and a higher degree from some school in Paris.
I am a Justice of the Peace, and I’ve been an officer of many organizations, including the national board of American Mensa, Intertel, and the Precision Guided Thinkers. I went on to become an expert in international business, technology, strategy, entrepreneurship, and innovation, and I taught some of what I learned in courses in American, German, British, Méxican, Chinese, and Japanese universities.
I’m nuts about baseball. I love my wife, our three children, our daughter-in-law, and our grandchildresn far more than they know. My favorite month is October, but, most of all, I love August. More is known, but little of it matters. One last thing: I play hard — really hard — every day.
The Medium Version...
I received my MPhil from the International School of Management, after studying at Fudan University in Shanghai, Temple University in Tokyo, St. John’s University in New York City, in addition to ISM’s Paris campus. In the process, I took four online courses and lived to tell the tale. I received my MBA (MPPM) from the Yale School of Management, where my emphasis was Managing Change and Innovation. I received my BBA in Corporate Finance from Iowa State University; it was the least it could do.
I served as the Visiting Professor of Innovation at Tecnológico de Monterrey where I taught product design, innovation in organizations, and entrepreneurship. I previously taught Management Information Systems at the respected MBA program at Iona College and Information Management at the Mountbatten Internship Programme of London. I was on the undergraduate and graduate computer science faculties at Southern Connecticut State University. I taught Managerial Analytics at Mercy, Entrepreneurship at Marymount-Manhattan, Informatics at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals, Accounting at Albertus Magnus, Management, Communications, and Environmental Policy at NYU, TQM at Sacred Heart University, Computer Security in Springfield, in addition to Ethics, Managerial Psychology, Economics, Managerial Accounting, and International Business on on-line platforms of several disreputable universities.
I have guest-lectured on Human Resource Strategy at Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, the Economics of Aging for the University of Indianapolis, Online Research at the University of Hartford, and Entrepreneurship at Sacred Heart University. I have created and taught 20+ MOOCs in “Cyber-War,” “On-line Business Strategies,” “Agile Management,” “Speed: The Misplaced Virtue,” “Blockchain, Bitcoin, & the Future of Trust,” just to name a few.
I have self-published 25+ 300-page textbooks on various technology and business topics. I served as American Mensa’s National Publications Officer. I edited M-Pressions for two wonderful years. I have recently completed four non-technical books — a collection of short stories, a collection of essays and poetry, a book of quotations, and a novel — all of which should be published early next year. I had completed The Wrath of the Crowd: An Easter Cantata which was put on hold by the wrath of the Covid-19 pandemic....
A life-long entrepreneur, I have led start-ups in Web design, computer security, agriculture, distance learning platforms, publishing, marketing services, and the music business. I founded the consulting firm Spies & Associates in 1990 as an umbrella covering all my various consulting projects. Before that, I led Music Master, the marketing, advertising, and music agency, for nine years.
I have served on boards of directors as diverse as Children’s Services of Central Iowa, F&SUMC, Music Master, and American Mensa, Ltd. I have served four four-year terms as a Connecticut Justice of the Peace, ten years on the Ethics Commission (including two as Chair). As a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member, I have been trained in suicide prevention and counseling, Red Cross first aid, and I was CPR and Automated External Defibrillator certified. I was on the first UMCOR/NYAC team to go to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake and did disaster relief in Prattsville, New York, after Hurricane Irene and in Connecticut after Super Storm Sandi.

Student Success Modules
I developed these modules to accelerate the personal and professional development of my students.
Originally, I created a set of modules to bring students up-to-speed in areas where they were deficient. The approach proved so successful that I developed modules to polish various practical skills, which I made available to my colleagues’ students.
I then began offering these modules and their course materials to my graduates (for free and at no cost to the school), typically, one a month. These MOOCs build alumni ties (and donations) to the school, enhance alumni value in the job market (thus indirectly helping all of my students), and build networking opportunities for my current students.
